Honest questions

Is it for you?

Moving between Italy and Albania is a good idea for some people, and not for others. Here are a few honest questions to ask yourself before you decide.

  1. Is your pension private or public?

Only private pensions (INPS) can be exempt in Albania. Public, ex-INPDAP, state, or military pensions stay taxed in Italy. It is the first thing to clarify, and it is worth checking with a professional.

  2. Are you willing to live in Albania at least 183 days a year?

The exemption applies only if you genuinely move your residence and live in Albania for most of the year. Going back and forth is not enough.

  3. Have you thought about healthcare?

Registering with AIRE means losing Italian national health cover. Private healthcare in Albania works well, but it is a cost to plan for, especially with age.

  4. What ties do you keep in Italy?

A home, accounts, and family in Italy can weigh against you if your residence is reviewed. A solid, documented residence in Albania matters, and for the detail it is wise to ask a professional.

  5. Have you done a trial before deciding?

Many people suggest spending a month there before moving for good. Adapting is a life choice, not only a financial one.
